Epilogue

F ive years passed before the man who had called himself Makis returned to Greece. Those were difficult years for him; he suffered from delusions, believing he was followed wherever he went by a dark-clothed figure he could never quite see.

In Greece he hoped to make a fresh start, and with a small legacy following his mother’s death, he bought a hardware store in a town in the west of Crete. He met a woman, and married her.

Business was steady. When Christmas arrived, there was money to decorate the store front with a few lights.

The man who had called himself Makis fetched an aluminium ladder from the store and set its feet in the gutter, leaning the ladder across the pavement and against the wall. With hammer, staples and lights, he climbed to the top.

What happened next was never clear. The boy on the moped insisted some creature crossed the road ahead of him: a black cat or dog or something else, he couldn’t be sure. He swerved to avoid it and lost control of the moped. Unbalanced and flailing, he hit the ladder and brought it down.

The man who had called himself Makis crashed to the pavement. His last words were of being sorry, but what he was sorry for, he couldn’t make his new wife understand.

W henever he passed that spot in the road, Yanis asked himself how it was possible he could have seen his friend there on that night when Ilias must certainly have already been lying on the bakery floor. But if it wasn’t his friend, what had he seen? As time went by, still lacking an answer, he tried to put it out of his mind. But every year at Christmas, when the season of the demons began, Yanis made sure the fire burned bright in the fireplace, and never drove or walked that road except in daylight hours.
